The Healing Power of Microgreens
I have a deep love for microgreens! These tiny plants have become one of the most powerful and healing foods I’ve ever discovered. Whenever I add them to my salads, sprinkle them on my regular meals, or eat them directly, something magical happens. It feels as if the food is absorbed effortlessly into my system. Even when I’ve eaten to my brim, I feel light, clear, and energized — sometimes, I even notice my eyesight feels sharper!
What Are Microgreens?
Microgreens are a young class of edible vegetables, harvested just after the seed leaves have expanded but before the first true leaves emerge — approximately 1–3 inches (2.5–7.5 cm) tall. Though small, they are nutrient-dense powerhouses; they are a source of life for our cells and are now being celebrated as a new class of superfoods.
Their vibrant colours, delicate textures, and intense flavours make them not only a delight to eat but also a true source of life energy.
My Journey with Microgreens
My experience with microgreens began in the early 1980s, during my Siddha Samadhi Yoga journey under the guidance of Guruji Rishi Prabhakar.
Back then, during our silent retreats, we would often include microgreens as part of our fasting and cleansing routines. Even with a very light diet, these tiny greens helped us feel alert, energized, and deeply balanced.
In those days, only a few people in Ottawa were growing them commercially. Today, it’s heartening to see a thriving movement — microgreens have become a new wellness industry, spreading health and light to many homes.
The Science and Spiritual Energy of Microgreens
From a nutritional point of view, microgreens are condensed vitality. As a seed awakens from dormancy and begins its transformation into a plant, it bursts with life-force energy — the prana or chi that nourishes all living things.
Studies show that microgreens can contain 20–40 times more vitamins and antioxidants than their mature versions. They’re rich in vitamins A, C, E, and K, minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium, and potent antioxidants that protect cells from damage and inflammation. And, regular consumption of Microgreens with each meal increases the ability to stay alert and alive through the day in all tasks.
No wonder they make me feel so alive after eating them — they’re literally plants in transition, carrying the vibration of growth and renewal.
Growing and Enjoying Microgreens
The beauty of microgreens is that they are easy to grow at home, year-round.
You can grow them on a sunny windowsill, under LED lights, or even hydroponically. Larger seeds thrive in soil trays, while smaller ones grow beautifully in water or coco mats.
A few of my favourites are broccoli, watercress, radish, mustard, fenugreek, sunflower, pea shoots, and arugula — each has its own distinct flavour and personality. You can also explore grains like wheat, barley, corn and oats, or even legumes like chickpeas and lentils.
Sprinkle them on your salads, garnish on any food, blend them into smoothies, or simply eat them by the handful — they’ll uplift both your body and spirit.
A Closing Thought
Microgreens remind me that life’s greatest power lies in its smallest forms. Within each seed is the potential for a forest, and within each bite, the potential for transformation.
Consuming microgreens in every meal has contributed to increasing energy levels and with it, my ability to stay alert and alive throughout the day.
By choosing foods alive with prana — like microgreens — we honour both our body’s wisdom and the Earth’s generosity.
Microgreens nourish our bodies beyond our physical level. In Ayurveda and Yoga, we have the concept of the 5 Koshas – layers of being which range from the physical body to the inner self. These mighty little plants contribute to our well-being by:
- Nourishing the Physical Body (Annamaya Kosha) – the dense concentration of vitamins and minerals directly builds, repairs, and protects our physical form.
- Energizing the Vital Body (Pranamaya Kosha) – the lightness and easy digestion help fuel the body’s energy levels without weighing it down, directly enhancing your vitality and alertness.
- Clarifying the Mental Body (Manomaya Kosha) – when the physical and energetic bodies are clean and vibrant, the mind naturally becomes clearer and more focused, leading to greater mental clarity, improved focus, and emotional balance.
- Supporting Intuitive Awareness (Vijnanamaya Kosha) – improves brain health and cognitive function, which helps to create the physiological foundation for deeper awareness and insight.
- Contributing to a Sense of Bliss (Anandamaya Kosha) – overall vitality and well-being come from consuming pure, powerful foods that help stabilize the foundation for a more joyful and peaceful existence.
So, let us eat consciously, celebrate vitality, and let these tiny greens become a bridge between our physical nourishment and our spiritual awakening.
