The Art of Breathing: A Guide to Pranayama and Beyond
How do you evoke the strength of a certain personality within us?
How do you evoke the inner nature withinthat will help you sail through the challenges of your life?
How do you bring the vibration within and around you to attract those of a similar mind to walk through life?
Life's symphony begins with the first breath and ends with the last. These pivotal moments often pass unnoticed, yet they bookend our entire existence. Pranayama, the ancient art of breath control, offers a powerful tool for navigating life's challenges. By programming our breath patterns, we can master our responses to the world around us and within us.
Prana – that invisible energy – vibrates and moves within and around us, ever aware and vital. It invokes every thought and animates both mind and body. How, then, can we become the director of this energy to help us navigate through life? How can we harness it to sharpen our unique skills and align them with our vision?
The concept of Prana is as elusive as describing the divine. This universal energy permeates every level of creation, holding all living and non-living beings together. While often translated as 'breath,' Prana is merely one manifestation of its multifaceted nature. The word 'Pranayama' itself reveals the essence of this energy: 'Prana' means constant, and 'yama' means movement. Thus, Pranayama is the art of harnessing the constantly moving energy within us.
Have you ever felt an invisible presence guiding you through moments of fear or anxiety? Many who have faced extreme danger have reported this phenomenon, often referred to as the "Third Man" or "Felt Presence." It's as if a deeper part of ourselves awakens in times of need, offering strength, confidence, and hope.
The breath is intricately linked with the mind. When the breath is controlled, the mind follows suit. By adopting specific breathing techniques, we can regulate our inner energy flow and become more aware of our thoughts and emotions. This connection between breath and mind is a two-way street: as the breath moves, so does the mind. And when the breath is still, the mind finds calm.
In every action, thought, and deed, our breath pattern changes. This subtle yet profound connection between breath, thought, and action offers a powerful tool for personal growthand transformation. By mastering our breath, we can tap into a deeper sense of connection and guidance, unlocking our full potential.
Recognize how your breath patterns change in response to emotions. For example, when you're stressed or anxious, your breathing tends to become shallow and rapid.
Our thoughts influence our breath, and vice versa. By controlling and regulating the flow of breath in a systematic pattern, we can calm our mind and reduce stress – clear MENTAL AFFLICTIONS.
Breath patterns affect our behaviour and actions. For instance, when we are feeling calm and focused, we are more likely to make better choices.
One can Google – I call it our general Jagath Guru – and find several dialogues/videos about various Pranayama sequences, so many teachers.
It was fortunate that we could learn our practice from a great Avadhootha Dr. Sri Sri Ganapathi Sachchidhananda Swamiji’s Datta Kriya Yoga and also through Guruji Sri Rishi Prabhakar of Siddha Samadhi Yoga.
Regarding the practice, it is vital to learn in person from teachers with lifelong experience.
The relationship between breath and lifespan is also noteworthy. Species with slower, more deliberate breathing tend to live longer. Dogs, with their rapid breathing, have shorter lifespans compared to turtles, which breathe more slowly. This correlation highlights the importance of conscious breathing practices for our overall well-being.
